Covid-19 update (22 October)

In the past 24 hours, we have seen another large daily rise of admissions with patients having tested positive for Covid-19.

In the past 24 hours, we have seen another rise in admissions of those who have tested positive for Covid-19 and we are caring for 161 such individuals across our hospitals, that’s 131 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, 12 at Bassetlaw Hospital and 18 at Montagu Hospital. The age range of these patients is from 17 to 99.

Of these patients, seven require critical care, with four on mechanical ventilation, 14 non-invasive ventilation and six oxygen. We wish them all the very best and a speedy recovery.

With immense sadness, we have reported that five patients have passed away with Covid-19 having played a significant factor in the cause of death. We share our most heartfelt condolences with their friends, family and loved ones.

You will have no doubt seen by now that it has been confirmed that South Yorkshire will be moving to ‘Very High Alert’ also known as ‘Tier 3’ restrictions from Saturday.

As we have shared since September, our hospitals have seen the number of Covid-19 positive patients increase sharply from the low single digits just six weeks ago, to now more than 160 – which is higher than at any point during the first-wave.

Moving into a state of ‘Very High Alert’ means that we may be able to slowdown the current transmission rate, enabling us to safely deliver vital care and treatments for our patients.

We all appreciate that everyone is finding the situation very challenging but as a Trust we strongly believe that adhering to these enhanced measures is currently the best way to protect our communities.

We are also coming to a point in the year when flu and norovirus begins to circulate. Even if you have never had it, please make it a priority to get the flu jab this year.

Covid-19 can affect everybody, but in particular the vulnerable amongst us, so please keep yourselves and your loved ones safe and remember hands, face and space.
Thank you for continuing to support your local hospitals and healthcare workers, together we will again flatten the curve and save lives.
