DBTH Star Awards 2019: Volunteers of the year

The winners will be announced on Thursday 19 September 2019!

This award is sponsored by Lakeside Village, and the shortlist is:

Jenny Liddle, Eye Clinic Volunteer

The eye clinic is extremely busy and her support helps to keep the service running smoothly whilst offering the best possible patient experience. Outside of her hours volunteering in the eye clinic, Jenny has taken to fundraising for the Urology Department at DRI. She has spent countless hours of her free time promoting Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust’s latest appeal to raise £150,000 to purchase a much needed biopsy machine for the department.
The equipment will play a crucial role in effectively diagnosing prostate cancer in men and planning the most appropriate treatment plan for the patient.

Verna Nosworthy, Head and Neck Service Volunteer

Verna’s professional background, experience as a patient and family member means that she acts as a great support to patients families and staff. Her common sense, caring and calm approach provides families and patients with support and direction at what can be a difficult time.

Verna has also helped set up a head and neck support group for patients affected by head and neck cancer. She has made coffee, tea and been there for patients or a relative that needed a friendly face and a voice of reassurance and sensitivity. This support group was a great success and Verna was welcomed by patients and has become part of the team. Verna would like to continue to support this group which she is doing so in her own time.

Stuart Tate, Emergency Department Volunteer

The Emergency Department is a very busy area and from day one Stuart takes everything in his stride, always smiling and offering to help both patients and staff. Stuart has stayed over when it has been busy to help staff and goes above and beyond of what is expected of a Volunteer. He is a committed individual who has offered to do additional days of his own free will and makes that the patient’s journey into the ED starts on a pleasant note. He makes nursing staff aware if he feels that the patient may need attention ASAP and treats individuals with dignity and respect.

Good luck to our nominees and follow the action on #DBTHStars!
