Distribution centre for popular fashion store supports cervical screening

XPO Logistics in Grimethorpe, the main distribution centre for online fashion and beauty store ASOS, is working with a local health team to encourage their staff to attend all-important smear tests.

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, with around nine women a day diagnosed with the disease in the UK. The best form of protection against the illness is by attending a cervical screening appointment (smear test), however only three in four women eligible in the region are taking up the offer.

The centre, which employs in excess of 4,000 people, has recently welcomed a representative from the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Screening Team to talk to their staff about the test and the dangers of not attending this all important examination.

All women registered with a GP are automatically invited for screening when they reach 25. Usually there are no symptoms for the illness so it is only by having a smear test that any abnormal cells on the cervix can be found before they develop into cancer.

Richard Cawston, managing director-supply chain at XPO Logistics Europe said: “We’re thrilled to be working with the screening team on this. The health of our staff is one of our main priorities and we are committed to supporting initiatives that foster prevention.”

The smear test itself is quick and effective. It takes only five minutes and early detection of changes to the cervix prevents up to 75% of cervical cancers developing.

Katie Storer, Senior Communications and Engagement Officer for the NHS Screening Programmes, said: “We would like say a huge thank you to XPO Logistics for helping to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening.

“We’re trying to educate as many women as possible about smear tests and the risks if they don’t attend. So, if you’d like us to attend your organisation or community group, please get in touch by calling us on 01302 644245.”
