Hospital says thank you to ‘Friends’ for their continued support

The day room on Ward A4 at Bassetlaw Hospital has received a splash of colour all thanks to a donation from the Bassetlaw Freemasons.

The money, donated to the Trust via the Hospital League of Friends, has been used to purchase two leather lilac chairs for their day room. The comfy additions will complement the area which is currently undergoing a refurbishment to make it more welcoming and homely for patients.

A4 is a stroke and diabetes ward with a high number of elderly and frail patients. It is the ward team’s vision to brighten up the day room, making it more inviting for patients to spend time in, as well as encourage them, where possible, to get out of bed.  The room will also have an activities section where patients can do jigsaws, play cards, read books or even listen to the radio.

Miriam Boyack, Ward A4 Manager, said: “We know that getting elderly and frail patients out of bed and walking can contribute to a faster recovery.  Staying in bed can lead to loss of muscle power, strength and may make the difference between dependence and independence on discharge.  We want to say a huge thank you to the League Friends and the Bassetlaw Freemasons for their support, it means so much to the staff and our patients.”

In keeping with ambition for this refurbishment, the Trust is actively promoting campaigns such as #EndPJparalysis, a simple yet effective message which encourages and supports patients to get up and out of bed, into their clothes and take an active role in their recovery, as well as John’s Campaign, an initiative which removes restrictive visiting hours for carers and actively promotes their involvement in treatment and care.

Mary Payne, League of Friends, said: “The League of Friends fundraise on behalf of the people of Bassetlaw for their local hospital.  Bassetlaw Freemasons continues to support us and this latest donation will brighten up the day ward and hopefully encourage social interaction between patients.”

The League of Friends, founded over 50 years ago, raises thousands of pounds every year for patient comforts at Bassetlaw Hospital.
