The International Ear, Nose and Throat Masterclass returns to Doncaster Royal Infirmary

For the 16th consecutive year, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have hosted the international Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Masterclass.

Taking place at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, this forum brings together clinical experts from around the world, giving them an opportunity to share knowledge, demonstrate recent breakthroughs in patient care, and celebrate outstanding achievements.

The ENT Masterclass is always a bustling hive of academic activity and this year was no exception, with talks being delivered by esteemed delegates from across the world. Topics included things like complex airway problems, paediatric neck lumps, snoring and sleep apnoea, and robotic surgery in the head and neck.

Over the course of the three day programme, there were upwards of 30 engrossing talks, lively panel discussions and insightful group sessions for attendees to take on board. A particular highlight was the special guest lecture from Professor Vin Paleri of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, who gave a fascinating presentation on the future of Head and Neck Oncological practice, and how scientific and technological advancements will change the shape of the field.

Pleased with the ongoing success of this academic venture, Mr Shahed Quraishi OBE, consultant and founding director of the event, said: “I am always overwhelmed by the response to the masterclass, and it is incredibly gratifying to see that people from countries far and wide are embracing the opportunity to share their findings and network with colleagues. Word is evidentially continuing to spread about the benefits of the event and each year I look forward to seeing how things will grow.

‘’ On that note, I would like to take this opportunity to recognise everyone who helped bring this to fruition- from the volunteer faculty who delivered the excellent materials, to the team at DBTH who supported the hosting of the masterclass.’’

Speaking about the event, Suzy Brain England OBE, Chair of DBTH, said: ‘’ I am proud that DBTH has once again been able to host this Masterclass. It remains a major event within the surgical community, attracting professors and experts from Europe, Asia, Oceania and other parts of the UK. I must extend my gratitude to Mr Quraishi for all he does to develop and promote the programme, as it reflects really well on the Trust and demonstrates commitment as a teaching hospital to spreading learning and leading innovations’’.

One delegate who attended the masterclass gave a ringing endorsement, claiming that they emerged feeling like ’’a safer surgeon, and […] a more inspired one’’ to boot. The testimonial continued, adding that ‘’ the guest lecture on the future of surgery [was] one of the best talks I have ever heard’’ and thanking the team at DBTH for their incredible work making the whole of Masterclass happen.

This year’s ENT Masterclass was held from Friday 24 January to Sunday 26 January. Planning is already underway for the next conference.
