Special donation to hospital ward in memory of a much loved dad

The family of a Doncaster man have visited the hospital ward which cared for him in his final days to hand over a special donation in his memory.

Dennis Thorpe

Dennis Thorpe, of Woodlands, sadly passed away at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on 26 January 2017, at the age of 74, after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. He was cared for by the Trust’s Respiratory Unit and his family were keen to do something in his memory to benefit other families in a similar situation.

Dennis’ wife, Maggie, said: “We can’t thank the staff on the Respiratory Unit enough, the care Dennis received was outstanding, the doctors, nurses and health care assistants all supported us through such a difficult time in our lives, doing everything they possibly could to ensure Dennis was comfortable and pain free. Just two days before Dennis passed away, we were given the chance to cement our love for each other, by taking our vows at Dennis’ bedside – all of which was made possible by the wonderful staff at DRI. On behalf of our whole family, thank you from the bottom of our heart.”

The donation was handed over to the unit just before Christmas, by Maggie and family friend, Heidi Beetham.

Heidi said, “Dennis was like a Father to me, so I wanted to do something to say thank you for the exceptional care he received. I’d recently won a gift card, so decided to raffle it off to raise funds for the ward. I hope that the money raised will help others in the same situation, it’s only a small token but we know it will make a difference to someone.”

Nicola Severein-Kirk, Respiratory  Unit Ward Manager said “It was lovely to see Maggie and Heidi again and hear them speak so highly of the care Dennis received whilst with us. Thank you so much for the donation; it will be put to great use benefiting our patients and their families on the Respiratory Unit.”
