Bedside booklets introduced at local hospitals to improve patient care, safety and treatment

Wipe-clean folders are being introduced to bedsides across Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) this week (23 July) as the Trust looks to further improve patient care, safety and experience.

Called ‘Sharing How We Care For You’, the booklet contains 36 pages, outlining to patients, their families and visitors what to expect when receiving care and treatment at the Trust. Delivered in partnership with clinicians as well as patients, the handy guide covers everything from staff uniforms and day-to-day activities on wards and in services, to instructions on how to access the organisation’s free WiFi and other facilities.
The folders have been designed to ensure patients feel as comfortable and informed as possible, helping them to feel at home and to ensure that friends, families and carers know how the hospital operates and how they can support care and treatment.
Cindy Storer, Acting Deputy Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, said: “As a Trust, we think it is essential that patients are given every opportunity to access the information they need, engaging with their care and treatment. By introducing ‘Sharing How We Care For You’, and ensuring it is at the fingertips of every visitor, we are able to share how we do things at DBTH, ultimately improving patient care, safety and experience.”
The creation of the folder is the result of recent inpatient surveys undertaken at the Trust, which outlined the need for more patient information in wards and departments. Developed over the course of six months, the booklet is infection control compliant and every copy will be cleaned and disinfected upon discharge.
Cindy continues: “Hospitals can often feel like strange, alien places, with lots of staff coming and going. Sharing How We Care For You helps patients to familiarise themselves in their ward, and answers those crucial questions they might have. As a Trust we are committed to becoming the safest Trust in England, outstanding in all that we do and we believe this is just another step in this journey.””
Folders will be available throughout inpatient wards at Bassetlaw Hospital, Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital. A digital version is also available on the Trust’s website here: https://www.dbth.nhs.uk/patients-visitors/
