The family of a patient, who sadly passed away in February this year, have returned to Bassetlaw Hospital to say thank you to all the staff for the care their father received on the Intensive Care Unit.

The Radford family, from Langwith, have purchased TV/DVD players for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in memory of their late father Stephen who was admitted in October 2015.  Stephen had Guillain Barre Syndrome, a very rare and serious condition that affects the nerves, which had left him paralysed from the neck down.

Stephen was a patient on the unit for 15 months, passing away in February 2017.  A collection at his funeral raised almost £400 and his son Dean and daughter Lisa have purchased the sets for the unit at the request of their father.

Wendy Foster, Sister, said: “We are very grateful to the family for this generous donation which will benefit our patients.  Stephen was one of a kind and our longest staying patient on the unit, spending birthdays and Christmas with us.  Rad, as he liked to be called, became part of our ICU family and was always asking staff for his favourite meal of chips and gravy!  He had nicknames for all the different ward staff and was continually making us laugh, while friends and family would visit and regale us with stories of their antics including Rad’s love of music and huge record collection. He’s much missed by all of us on the ward.”

Dean and Lisa, said: “We wanted to thank all the staff for the care and compassion shown to Dad during his long stay on the unit.  Due to Dad’s limited mobility his TV acted as a distraction keeping him entertained and he wanted to ensure that other patients on the ward had the benefit of TVs by their bedsides.”
