Hospital choir bring festive cheer to patients

A group of singers, made-up entirely of staff members at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), are putting on a series of festive Christmas carol performances for patients who are spending time in hospital this December.

The DBTH Choir, which formed in 2015, is entirely voluntary and organised by colleagues from various hospital departments across the Trust and meets once a week to practice their signature numbers. To date they have performed at the organisation’s annual staff awards, two televised England v New Zealand rugby matches, and have even been invited to sing at York Minster at a celebratory NHS event.

This year, to help get patients into the Christmas spirit, the choir have been singing traditional Christmas carols on wards at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Carol Orr, Education Lead at the Trust by day and enthusiastic choir member by night, said: “All of the practice we put in over the year becomes worthwhile when we see patients enjoying themselves at such a special time of year. Being away from your friends and family in a hospital setting during the festive season can be unsettling for our patients so we’re glad we could bring some traditional Christmas cheer to take their minds off their treatment.”

The choir also have an extra performance planned for Tuesday 18 December, in the Main Foyer (Gate 4 entrance) of Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

If you would like to see the choir in action, everyone is welcome to come to the performance which will kick off at 5.30pm.
