Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals’ Knowledge and Library Service has achieved a perfect score of 100% for Health Education England’s (HEE) annual NHS library assessment.

Each year NHS libraries are assessed against national standards as detailed in the NHS Library Quality Assurance Framework. Recognising the excellent provision the organisation has to offer, HEE awarded the Trust top marks, one of only five services in the north of England to achieve such a feat.

The assessors were particularly impressed by the range of facilities for patients, carers and the public as part of a partnership with Doncaster Libraries. Improvements made since the last assessment were also recognised such asmaintaining a staff publications register and supporting nursing and midwifery revalidation.

Hospital libraries perform an important role within any trust, providing staff with support to research and access electronic resources, as well as providing evidence to support decision making. Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals operate two libraries, one in Doncaster Royal Infirmary and the other in Bassetlaw Hospital.

Janet Sampson, Knowledge, Library and Information Services Manager at the Trust, said: “This is a fantastic achievement. A great deal of work went into highlighting the work done in highlighting the health and wellbeing activities of the Trust, supporting staff and students in their Continued Professional Development, eLearning and research activities, and also the various achievements of our outreach and eResource provision in supporting the objectives of the Trust and the educational needs of staff.”

Karen Barnard, Director of People and Organisational Development at the Trust, said: “I want to say a huge well done to the Knowledge and Library Service for gaining top marks. This is recognition of the hard work and dedication of the entire team, who go above and beyond each and every day in order to ensure we have top-notch service in the Trust.”

With the next assessment due later this year the team are now hard at work to ensure they achieve 100% for the second year running.
