Two elite surgeons from China have visited Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals during a two week visit to the UK, developing professional clinical ties with the Capital Medical University in Beijing.

Awarded ENT Masterclass® visiting scholarships during the visit, the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeons Jing Xie and Jiao Xia spent three days at Doncaster Royal Infirmary from 23 to 25 January.  After this, the visiting medics travelled to London for the 13th Annual International ENT Masterclass® founded by the Trust’s Consultant ENT Surgeon Mr Shahed Quraishi and hosted by the Royal College of Surgeons.

During their three day stay, the two surgeons visited the hospital’s ENT outpatient clinic and met their medical counterparts. They observed a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) in action, where patient conditions and treatments are discussed by a range of medical professionals, and assisted in operating theatres with Mr Mark Watson, Consultant ENT Surgeon.  Finally the pair met the Trust’s Director of Education Dr Alastair Strachan and former Chief Executive Mike Pinkerton.

Jiao Xia, Consultant ENT Surgeon who specialises in Rhinology (nose surgery), explained: “I am very fortunate to have this opportunity to visit the hospital to learn about British clinical culture to continue to improve treatment in China, not only our own people but also for western people who travel and live in our country.”

Jing Xie, who has a special interest in pathologies of the ears, said: “Comparing the differences in clinical practice and training between our two countries has been very interesting.  In China we have a much larger patient population so do not have MDT meetings for each patient as they do in the UK. I was surprised to learn that everyone in the UK has access to free treatment as I had thought it was similar to America where the majority of patients are expected to be insured.”

Mr Quraishi, who was the first British ENT consultant to be awarded the accolade of Visiting Professor by the Capital Medical University in 2016, said: “It is a great honour for us here at the Trust to welcome Jing and Jiao.  We are very proud to have established a clinical professional relationship with the university in Beijing that will benefit patients from both the UK and China.  Sharing the expertise of leaders in the field of ENT medicine in our respective countries will help to advance ENT surgery even further.”

Celebrating achieving Teaching Hospitals status, this visit has helped to develop strong clinical links with medical professionals across the globe and is down to the commitment and dedication of Mr Quraishi and his work to make the ENT Masterclass® Europe’s largest ENT training platform www.entmasterclass.com.
