Children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary receives donation of 100 copies of children’s book

The children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) has received a generous donation from ModuleCo of 100 children’s books, written, designed and printed with hospital staff and patients in mind.

Created by the team at ModuleCo – who recently completed work on our new paediatric unit – the book takes us through the journey of Riley, a young child who breaks her leg and has to visit the hospital.

The book teaches us of all the different staff Riley encounters and the part they play in caring for her, from the dispatcher who takes the 999 call, to the radiologist who does her x-ray, all the way to the pharmacist who prescribes her medicine.

Author Eliot Langfield, who by day leads the marketing for ModuleCo, decided to write the book to wave the flag for colleagues who work in the facilities they design.

Eliot said: “We aren’t onsite for very long. Despite this, we have a relationship with the trust and I wanted to do something that is nice for staff and patients.”

He went on: “We just wanted to bring a smile to the staff and highlight all the people involved in delivering care.”

Plans for the books include giving them to young patients to read and placing them in waiting areas.

The book features illustrations by Nigel Byde, one of the several ModuleCo team members who helped manage and contribute to the project.

Jonathan Brindley, Sales and Marketing Director at ModuleCo, said: “Everything was produced in-house. It’s something we are all proud of.”

Another excellent feature of the book is its use of ‘OpenDyslexic’, a free online typeface designed to be dyslexia-sympathetic and make reading it easier for children and adults alike.

Helen Mee, the senior sister in the Paediatric unit, said: “It will make a real difference to the patients we care for, giving them a better understanding of what the stages of treatment are.”

“It might also inspire our future workforce by giving children a better understanding of all the roles within healthcare.” she explained.

We would like to say a huge thank you to ModuleCo for their continued support and also for this generous donation.
