DBTH Star Awards 2019: Collaboration Award

The winners will be announced on Thursday 19 September 2019!

This award is sponsored by Healthwatch Doncaster, and the shortlist is:

IT Development and Emergency Department teams

These two teams have been working collaboratively to improve patient experience, safety and working flow between ED and Radiology and between ED and Acute Medicine.

Some of their developments include an ED tracker, to track patients moving from ED to radiology and back and the redesign of an operational room, to ensure visibility of all Trust systems and other supporting information. They have also developed a patient tracker onto AMU to capture a list of patients that require admission. This also collects performance data to support mandatory audit collection and helps to monitor patient pathways to drive change and improvements.

Foundation School for Health team

In October 2018 DBTH entered into a formal partnership with Hall Cross Academy, creating the first ‘Foundation School in Health.’

Building on the work of the Education Placement Team, the partnership provides new opportunities to support students as they look towards job prospects past the age of 16 and how things can be delivered locally, providing an insight into the myriad of career opportunities available within health and social care.

The partnership will also provide further opportunities for pupils, from age 11 onwards, wishing to pursue a career in the health and social care. The partnership has had a significant impact on raising aspirations of the young people from within the local community, the community that it serves, inevitably investing in the future workforce.

Nicola Parker and Sophie Gilhooly

During the recent wave of NHSE 100 day challenge, Nicky and Sophie joined the spinal project team. The 100 day challenge methodology is designed to bring together partners from across Doncaster to work collaboratively to improve quality and access for patients. This challenge identified a need across Doncaster’s health community for better access to simple advice for patients with new episodes of low back pain as well as a need to provide a clear pathway for our GP colleagues to follow.

Both Nicky and Sophie were key in addressing these issues. Following NICE guidance they devised a pathway which was agreed by the group and subsequently presented this to GPs in North Locality where the team were piloting this work. Referrals to the First to Physio service in the North Neighbourhood increased by 66% and the number of spinal injections have reduced. Nicky & Sophie have demonstrated to us, just what can be achieved in a short timeframe with remarkable effectiveness through collaborative working.

Good luck to our nominees and follow the action on #DBTHStars!
