Ray graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Malta in 1975, achieving a distinction, and then undertook postgraduate studies in Liverpool and Glasgow. He was admitted to the Fellowship of the RCS Edin in 1979 and the RCS Eng in 1981, before obtaining a Masters in Surgery (Ch.M) from the University of Liverpool in 1985. He then went on to complete his Higher Surgical Training in 1989 and was appointed to Doncaster in the same year as Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon.
He would later go on to hold multiple posts at the Trust including Trust Postgraduate Clinical Tutor, Director of General Surgical Services, Associate Post Graduate Dean, and Director of Clinical Audit, before becoming the Deputy Medical Director of DBTH in 2008.
During his time as Deputy Medical Director, Ray played a vital role in implementing new projects and shaping the future of DBTH. He led the Trust contribution to the National Patient Safety Campaign, introduced Structured Judgement Reviews of Mortality, and implemented the Medical Examiner Process, whilst also chairing multiple committee’s and panels.
In 2013 Ray also became the Director of the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Abdominal Aneurysm Screening Programme. Under his tenure as Director, this programme has been successfully implanted across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, with the trust retaining the Lead provider position.
Ray has also has a medicolegal practice outside of his NHS commitment over the last 20 years which he describes as having a beneficial effect on his clinical practice.
As we are charting a new direction with the patient safety agenda, Ray’s experience will be retained for a short transition period to support the agenda during its evolution.
Dr Tim Noble passed on his thanks to Ray and commented on the significant impact that he had on the Trust. He said: “Ray’s retirement is a significant moment in the Trusts history. He has contributed to so much in the way of development of the Trust and has offered a steadying influence through a series of changes. I am hugely indebted to Ray for his support for me in my role as a Deputy Medical Director and more recently as Executive Medical Director. Thank you Ray for all your input over the years. We wish you a long, happy and healthy retirement.”
