We Care into the Future 2026

Exploring real careers in health and social care.

We Care Into the Future returns for its seventh year, continuing to inspire young people across Doncaster and Bassetlaw to consider a future in the NHS and wider care sector. Recognised nationally as an example of best practice, the event gives Year 8 students (aged 12 to 13) a unique opportunity to see what a career in health and care could really look like.

About the event

Organised by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals and partners across health and social care, We Care Into the Future brings learning to life through experience.

Each event features a fully interactive simulated hospital journey – from ambulance arrival, through emergency care, theatres and wards, to recovery and discharge. Along the way, students meet real NHS professionals demonstrating their roles and the skills they use every day.

Beyond the simulation, there are around 50 interactive stands, representing more than 100 different careers across hospitals, community services, and social care. Pupils can handle equipment, try out tasks, and talk directly with professionals from a huge range of disciplines – from radiography and pharmacy to estates, IT, and clinical engineering.

Why take part?

We Care Into the Future has grown year on year, becoming one of the region’s most successful and recognisable careers events. Now in its seventh year, it has welcomed thousands of students from schools across Doncaster and Bassetlaw and is widely viewed as a benchmark for early careers engagement within the NHS.

The event continues to attract national attention as a model of best practice, demonstrating the impact that hands-on, collaborative learning can have when schools and local health partners work together.

At its heart, the event is about real learning from real people. Every activity and demonstration is delivered by professionals working within health and social care today – the paramedics, nurses, radiographers, therapists, engineers and countless others who keep our hospitals and community services running. Their stories and experiences give students an authentic insight into what working in health and care is really like, and show that there is no single path into the sector, but many.

The experience itself goes far beyond a traditional careers fair. Through a carefully designed simulated patient journey, students witness and take part in live demonstrations, following a patient from ambulance arrival to discharge. They see teamwork, communication, compassion and technical skill in action – the real building blocks of a career in care. Alongside this, they can explore interactive stands filled with genuine clinical and technical equipment, ask questions, and try their hand at practical tasks.

It’s an approach that makes learning tangible, sparks curiosity and helps students imagine themselves in those roles.

What makes We Care Into the Future truly unique is the scale and breadth of opportunity it presents. More than one hundred different careers are represented across hospitals, community services and social care settings – from medicine, midwifery and nursing to estates, IT, catering and digital innovation.

The event celebrates the diversity of the NHS and care system, showing students that whether their interests lie in science, technology, people, problem-solving or practical skills, there is a place for them in health and social care.
