About fine needle aspiration

Fine needle aspiration involves the doctor or nurse taking a sample of cells from the breast in order to assist in making a diagnosis. It may be done if you have a breast lump or change in texture of the breast tissue.

The doctor or nurse will use a needle with a syringe attached to obtain some breast cells. The needle will move gently in and out of the breast. The cells removed will be sent to the laboratory.

Risks of the procedure

The risks of the procedure include bruising which may appear at the needle site immediately or over the hours following the test. You may also experience mild to moderate discomfort.

This varies from person to person but should not cause pain that will prevent you from maintaining daily activities. We recommend that if you experience discomfort you should take simple painkillers such as Paracetamol.

Results

The results of the test are not available the same day. Before you leave the breast unit you will be given a further appointment to receive the results, either in person or by telephone, usually within a week.
