The Trust, which runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Mexborough Montagu, are asking for people to apply for the ‘patient communication volunteer’ role which will mainly focus on helping patients to video call their loved ones and providing updates on a patient’s care to their relatives.
Stacey Nutt, Deputy Director of Nursing for Patient Experience, said: “Staying in touch with your loved ones through a period of hospitalisation is vital as it improves your mental wellbeing, keeps you in some routine and is integral to recovery. Whilst we have coronavirus visiting restrictions in place, these new volunteers will be able to assist our patients in keeping that all important contact with their relatives, whilst giving our clinical colleagues more time to focus on delivering care.
“We hope that our new volunteers will also help ease the minds of those who have loved ones staying with us at the moment, contacting them with updates provided by our clinicians on their care and progress of their relatives.
“As well as helping our patients, staff and relatives, we’re sure that this will be a very rewarding role for all those who join our team. The response from our communities throughout the pandemic has been immense and we know that many people have been enquiring about donating their time as well as monetary donations and provisions so we’re delighted to be opening up this opportunity and looking forward to having some of our supporters here with us.”
Taking into consideration shielding guidance for certain age groups and those who are considered clinically vulnerable, the Trust are asking that those applying for the new volunteer role only do so if they are not over 70, pregnant or part of a clinically vulnerable group due to a health condition (there is a full list of these groups on the Trust’s website).
As the role doesn’t require any involvement in medical care or administering medications, there are no special qualifications needed to apply and there are a range of hours available.
If you are interested in joining the team, head to https://www.dbth.nhs.uk/volunteers/ for more information and to fill out an application form.
The Trust has a dedicated team of volunteers who provide other forms of help and assistance to patients and visitors in the hospitals, many of whom are currently shielding but whom the Trust is looking forward to welcoming back when it’s safe to do so.
