Renal staff go rambling

Staff on a specialist unit at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have completed a ten-mile trek for charity in a bid to support the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Kidney Association.

Sporting fancy dress, the team walked from Mexborough Montagu’s Dialysis Unit to the same service at Doncaster Royal infirmary (DRI). With donations big and small accepted, the ramblers managed to raise over £1,000 for the local kidney charity, money which will be used for the benefit of patients.

The Department of Renal Medicine at DRI first opened its doors to patients with kidney disease on 26 March 2007, as a 12 bed inpatient ward, adding an outpatient clinic in July of the same year. Over the past decade, Ward 32 and 28 have since further expanded to 20 inpatient beds and now hosts an acute haemodialysis area.

The department cares for over 2,000 patients from across South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire. Providing treatment for a range of renal conditions, the unit currently looks after 230 dialysis patients, which is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly. It often involves diverting blood to a special machine to be cleaned.

Rebecca Stevenson, Staff Nurse on Ward 32 at DRI, said: “This has become an annual event for the team and is great fun as well as a fantastic way to raise money. I want thank everyone who took part as well as those who donated – with over £1,000 raised this will be of huge benefit to our patients.”
