Local hospitals’ IT service scoop ‘Team of the Year’ award

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) hosted their annual Star Awards on Thursday 20 September, recognising the achievements of staff and volunteers who have gone the extra mile in the care and treatment of patients throughout the year.

Presented by BBC Look North’s Harry Gration MBE, the event was a rousing celebration of the NHS and most importantly, the fantastic workforce on whom it relies. With 12 awards handed out over the course of the memorable evening – such as ‘Unsung Hero of the Year’, ‘Leader of the Year’ and ‘Rising Star’ – no area or contribution was overlooked.

The annual ceremony not only shines a spotlight on clinical staff, but also commends the individuals and teams that make a difference behind the scenes. Recognising the important role of these health service heroes, the ‘Corporate Team of the Year’ award considers the efforts of those who enable fantastic patient care and treatment.

Nominees for the prize were the Estates and Facilities department, who delivered substantial improvements throughout the last 12 months, as well as the Recruitment department for their work in ensuring the Trust attracts the best and brightest from the region and beyond. Amongst a tough field, it was the IT Development Team who came out top due to the implementation of several technological innovations throughout the past year.

Most notably, the team were responsible for the creation of a bespoke system which brings many different health information services into one, easy-to-use, digital dashboard. This application, known as the ‘Clinical Portal’, takes patient data from various sources and stores it all in one secure program which is accessible on a number of different devices.

Prior to the introduction of the Clinical Portal, a patient’s medical history could be heavily fragmented and dispersed across separate systems. This meant that clinicians would have to login to separate applications, in order to get different pieces of information, which could be time intensive and could be better spent caring and treating patients.

Recognising the need for change, the IT Development team landed upon the idea of producing a convenient and simple new app and one that could be used to securely house patient information. With a concrete plan in place, they soon commenced work on the Clinical Portal, collaborating with enthusiastic clinicians, as well as students from Sheffield Hallam University, so that the dashboard suited their needs and displayed data in an accessible way.

Sponsoring the award was FredShaw & Co, specialists in sheet metal fabrication. Gary Tingle, a Director at the company said: ‘’We were honoured to be a part of the Star Awards celebration. The NHS is a national treasure and its staff deserve plenty of acknowledgement for what they do. We are especially delighted to be associated with the Corporate Team award, as the importance of those who often work behind the scenes cannot be overstated. Although they don’t directly work with patients, it’s my understanding that the nominees in this category are absolutely vital to the smooth running of the Trust, as well as the care that it provides. I want to say a huge ‘well done’ to the IT Development team as well as the nominees!’’

Suzy Brain England, Trust Chair, said: ‘’There was a fantastic field of nominees for this award. With that in mind, the IT Development team were undeniably worthy recipients of the Corporate Team of the Year award.’

“The clinical portal has been a fantastic addition to DBTH, improving the way in which clinicians perform their daily tasks. It has allowed them to work more quickly and accurately than ever before and we have received a huge amount of positive feedback since it was launched earlier in the year. In fact, users have got in touch to praise everything from the simplified navigation, to the noticeable improvements in transfer of care.

“I am incredibly proud of their tireless efforts, which have delivered great benefits to the Trust.”
