Endocrinology is the study and care of the endocrine system, which includes, but it not limited to:

Type 1 and 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Addison’s Disease
Hypothyroidism
Hormone problems

Patients are usually admitted via A&E or the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU), but the unit does take direct admissions from GPs, clinics and other services.

There are specialist nursing staff that work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to ensure Endocrine patients receive the best possible care.

Retinopathy Screening Service (Diabetic Eye Camera)

Diabetes is the single most common cause of blindness in people of working age in the United Kingdom and Western Europe. Despite this, early detection can significantly reduce the rate of impairment or even prevent it. The screening service for all diabetic patients within Doncaster, Bassetlaw and the Dearne Valley. Diabetic patients that are known to us are automatically referred to this service. Diabetic eye camera are installed at all of our hospital sites.

Diabetic Antenatal Service

This Multi Disciplinary Team Service was set up to improve the care given to pregnant women and their unborn children and reduce the risk of congenital disorders. This is a one-stop service which brings together the skills and expertise of an Obstetrician, Diabetic Physician, Dietician, Midwife and Diabetic Nurse Specialist.

Diabetic Foot Ulcer Clinic

This service provides care for diabetic foot ulcers, with the aim of preventing hospital admissions, by expert care and good communication with wound care specialists and vascular surgeons.

Young Person’s Clinic & Diabetic Paediatric Clinic

These clinics aim to review the diabetic care of younger patients, and support them with their condition. The sessions encourage young people to share their issues and problems.
