International Women’s Day 2021 profile: Sheena McDonell

Monday was International Women’s Day and to mark the occasion we have been asking our female colleagues about themselves. You may be surprised by their answers!

Sheena McDonnell, Non-Executive Director:

Tell us about your journey into the NHS and what you would do differently, if anything?

I am a Non Executive Director (NED) for short and as such I am not directly employed by the trust but am appointed and serve in terms of three years. I have already completed three years and have a further year before I will need to re-stand for appointment.  I have learnt a lot about the NHS in my last three years, it has been a very steep learning curve. I definitely want to spend more time seeing services rather than hearing about them across the trust.

If you were stuck in a lift with anybody who would it be and why

Oprah Winfrey, would just be fascinated with all of her stories from people she has met and interviewed as well as her own story.

Your most inspirational female icon, past or present?

I would have to choose two, firstly my mum who has been and still is an inspiration to me and the of course Suzy Brain England, our chair

What is your favourite food and most disliked, and why?

I do love Thai food or anything with lots of chilli’s. I don’t like custard and as a result trifles, just memories of it as child spoiling a lovely sponge cake.

Do you have any phobias

Not a fan of wasps and heights, not really phobic but just don’t like them.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to be a barrister

Tell us something funny about yourself

There is a wall on my drive and I have lived in the same house for 11 years and during that time the wall hasn’t moved and yet I have managed to back mine or my husbands car into it three times at least!
