Circumcision

This leaflet is for advice for patients following circumcision which is the cutting away of all or part of the foreskin or prepuce of the penis.

Eating and drinking

You may eat and drink as usual when you return home, if you feel well enough. If you feel sick just drink water until the sickness passes.

Wound care and bathing

Keep your dressing in place overnight. Soak your dressing off in the bath the morning after your operation and continue to have daily baths until the wound has healed. The stitches will dissolve and eventually drop out. Do NOT add salt or bath oils to the water.

You should wear tight fitting underpants rather than boxer shorts to give you firm support until the wound is healed.

Pain relief

You will be given pain relief medication to take home with you. It is advisable to take these tablets regularly for the first few days as a small amount of discomfort is easier to manage. If you require more pain killers your GP will prescribe them for you.

Work, driving and other activities

You can return to work after a few days if you feel comfortable. Strenuous and athletic activity including sexual activity should be avoided for about three weeks.
