What Is Work Experience?

Work experience is a short-term opportunity where you get to spend time in a workplace to see what it’s really like. It’s a chance to try out a job, learn new skills, and find out what kinds of careers might interest you in the future.
At DBTH, our work experience program lets you explore different roles within the hospital, giving you a taste of what working in healthcare is all about.
Why Do Work Experience at DBTH?
Are you curious about what it’s like to work in a hospital? Doing work experience at DBTH is a great way to find out! While many people think of hospitals as just doctors and nurses, there are loads of different jobs that help keep everything running smoothly and make sure patients get the best care.
At DBTH, work experience is your chance to learn new skills, build your confidence, and get a real feel for what it’s like to work in healthcare. Whether you’re interested in managing your time better, getting organized, or just understanding how a hospital works, this is the perfect opportunity. Each year, we offer about 300 placements to students like you, as well as to people thinking about switching careers.
What Kind of Work Experience Can You Do?
We offer both clinical placements (working with patients) and non-clinical placements (working behind the scenes) in different parts of the hospital. If you’re under 16, you can still do a work experience placement, but it will be in a non-clinical department. Some areas might not be able to take students because of the nature of the work or patient safety, but don’t worry—there are plenty of other options to explore!
How Do You Apply for Work Experience at DBTH?

Interested? Here’s how you can apply:
- Get the Application Form: Download the Work Experience Application Form and fill it out. Make sure to complete every section—if something doesn’t apply to you, just write “N/A.” Forms that aren’t fully filled out won’t be accepted.
- Pick Your Dates: Choose your preferred dates for the placement and also a backup date, just in case your first choice isn’t available.
- Send in Your Form: Once your form is ready, email it to dbth.workexperience@nhs.net. We’ll get back to you to confirm if you’ve got a spot. Remember, your placement isn’t guaranteed until everything is confirmed and arranged.
- Health Check: If you’re accepted, we’ll send you a link to complete an Occupational Health form. This step is really important—you need to be cleared by Occupational Health before you can start your placement. Once that’s done, we’ll send you the final details of your placement.
- Timing Matters: Be sure to send in your application at least 6–8 weeks before your preferred placement date. This gives us enough time to sort everything out, including your health clearance.
- Changing Your Mind? If something comes up and you can’t do your placement, or if you decide not to go ahead with your application, please let us know by emailing dbth.workexperience@nhs.net.
