Work experience at DBTH

Undertaking a work experience placement at the Trust is a fantastic way to gain insight into a particular career within the health service. Often people think of the NHS as nurses and doctors, however, there are many different roles which collectively ensure that a hospital runs well, offering the best possible care for patients.

Our work experience placements are a valuable opportunity to develop confidence as well as skills, such as time management, organisation and gain an insight into workplace culture. Each year, we offer around 300 placements to local students, as well as those looking for a career change.

We offer work experience placements in set cohorts throughout the year. Places on the cohorts are subject to availability of the department and are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

We offer clinical and non-clinical placements in numerous departments within the hospital. Please be aware that we are unable to offer clinical placements to under 16s, however, there are various non-clinical departments that you can undertake work experience. There are also certain areas cannot accept students due to being high risk areas or the vulnerability of the patient.

If you are interested in completing work experience with the trust you will need to download and complete the Work Experience Application Form here. Please see below guidance for completing the form and the process:

When completing the form please complete all sections, if not applicable state N/A. Please note incomplete forms will be declined. Please be aware that your preferred date may not be available. Therefore, when completing the form please state a 1st and 2nd choice and we will endeavour to accommodate your request. Once you have completed the form return to dbth.workexperience@nhs.net

Once you have submitted your request we will be in touch to confirm if you have been placed on a cohort. At this stage requests are not confirmed as placements are to be arranged and department availability is subject to change.

If your work experience application is successful you will be sent an Occupational Health link to complete, please complete this as soon as possible, as without this you will be unable to commence in placement. All students must undertake Occupational Health Clearance before they commence in placement in line with trust policy. Once we have received this clearance we can then send your placement agreement which will confirm the date and area of your placement.

Below are the dates we are currently accepting request for:

25th March 2019 – 29th March 2019

If you want to complete work experience in a month not shown above, please check back at a later date. Please note that applications must be returned a minimum 2 ½ weeks before the placement date to allow us to obtain Occupational Health Clearance and organise placements.

Applications are open for Work Experience from October 2018. Any requests received before this will be declined.

It is important that you email dbth.workexperience@nhs.net if you can no longer attend your allocated work experience cohort/do not wish for your application for work experience to be processed any further.
