Hospital Charity Enters First-Ever Running Team in Doncaster 10K

The submission of a running team into the Doncaster 10K marked a historic moment for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) Charity.

Late last year, 20 individuals entered the race, raising £3,231 for DBTH charity.

The team, made up of dedicated DBTH colleagues, supporters, and fundraisers, took on the challenge to raise vital funds for the charity, helping to support projects which improve patient care and staff wellbeing across the Trust.

Suzy Brain England OBE, Chair of the Board at DBTH, said: “We are proud to have entered a team into the Doncaster 10K for the first time.

“Our runners took on a fantastic personal challenge and helped to raise funds to enhance patient care and staff wellbeing across our hospitals.

“We appreciate all the funds raised by members of our community. It illustrates how much our hospitals mean to them, their families and friends.”

In its seventh year, the Doncaster 10K is one of the region’s most popular road races and draws thousands of runners from across the community.

Dr Khairul Mohammed Shahdan, Emergency Consultant at Doncaster Royal Infirmary

One such runner was Dr Khairul Mohammed Shahdan, an Emergency Consultant at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, who raised a brilliant £544.

Dr Shahdan said: “Our Emergency Department has benefitted from the charity before, and I was motivated to complete the run and give something back.”

Following a rainy start and wet socks, Dr Shahdan was spurred on by his wife, children and fellow runner, Dave, Emergency Medicine Charge Nurse at Bassetlaw Hospital.

Dr Shahdan said: “I wasn’t used to running in damp socks and shoes and then could not keep up with Dave at the seventh kilometre when I started to feel the burn in my legs.”

Despite this setback, Dr Shahdan was thrilled to finish the 10K in a little over 51 minutes in high spirits.

He said: “Upon crossing the finishing line I was so happy that I managed to complete it and with my family and friends waiting for me.

“It was a very well organised run and one that I would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of doing a 10K.”

This milestone marks a significant moment for DBTH Charity, strengthening its presence within the local running and fundraising scene.

Willing supporters were entered for free by DBTH Charity and required a minimum sponsorship of £150 before the event.

The charity plans to submit a team to the event once again in 2025.

About DBTH Charity:

Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals’ Charity is the official charity which supports Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Trust to go above and beyond by providing additional equipment, services and amenities for our patients, visitors and staff which cannot be funded by the NHS alone.

These additional extras would not be possible without the support of our community. With your help, we can continue to work hard with our Trust to fund innovative and exciting projects that make a difference to our patients, their families and our colleagues who care for them.
