The virtual trek will see the team walking, running, cycling or swimming the distance of the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats route, totalling 85 miles each in just eight weeks.
A bariatric wheelchair, specially made for those who have obesity, would ensure equality for all patients, and give them access to the entirety of the rehab centre.
Daniel Wheater, Stroke Rehabilitation Therapy Team Lead at Montagu Hospital, said: “As a team we have identified multiple times that a wheelchair of this type would greatly improve the patient experience.”
When choosing the activity for their fundraiser, they wanted something inclusive, challenging but also achievable.
Daniel went on: “This will be especially challenging after the indulgent festive period! Not to forget the added challenge of exercising in the cold and wet weather that January often brings.”
Joining Daniel are his colleagues, who range from Physiotherapists to Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists to Rehab Assistants and Dietitians.
The team aim to raise £500 for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospital’s Charity but with only £280 needed for the wheelchair, the remainder raised will go towards a ‘Riser recliner chair’, offering better comfort and aiding sitting tolerance for stroke patients.
When asked how the group felt about beginning the challenge, Daniel said: “There are mixed feelings within the group. Some people raring to go to get the miles in and others not so keen on the cold weather! I am sure everyone will be up to the challenge.
“The team are planning on organising some after work social walking sessions which should add some fun.”
To date, the team have raised an incredible £407 and still have many weeks to go.
