Superheroes raise funds for local hospitals

Last month, the Children’s Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) put on a ‘Nurses are Superheroes’ event, raising £2,000 for the Trust’s Charity as well as for new televisions, which will be used to entertain both patients and visitors.

The event was arranged to mark ‘National Superhero Day’, which is an annual celebration that takes place every April and recognises the importance of superheroes as role models for children. Not only does the day pay tribute to our favourite comic-book heroes – such as Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman – but it also shines a light on their real-life equivalents in the military, police and health. Although these individuals may not wear capes or masks, they are every bit as brave and inspirational as their fictional counterparts.

This is why the team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, decided to do something special for the occasion, in order to champion the efforts of their incredible nursing staff. Organising a special fundraising event, the Children’s Ward made sure that there was plenty on offer and lots of fun things to do for the kids. They decorated the area with banners, donned their own costumes, put on a bake sale with superhero themed and inspired food and held a raffle, with prizes donated from local businesses. Best of all, Chase the Police Dog from Paw Patrol dropped-by to visit the patients and collect donations.

Samantha Fawkes, Matron for the department, said: ‘’Everyone had a great time, with our nurses dressing up as their favourite costumed heroes. For the entire day our ward was transformed into a bright and colourful comic-book world. It really made a huge difference to all of the children who stopped by, lifting their spirits and brining a smile to their faces.’’

All-in-all, the day was a huge success and raised an impressive £2,000 for DBTH Charity. The ward will be looking to use these funds to purchase some new TV screens or gaming consoles for the ward, in order to keep children entertained during their stay.

Lois Mellor, Head of Midwifery, said: ‘’Here at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals we are always proud of the efforts made by our nursing team. So it’s really encouraging to see a whole day being dedicated to acknowledging their contributions. Even better, we managed to do this whilst also collecting money for long-term improvements to our care environment.’’
