1,000 hospital colleagues put their arms forward for flu vaccination in first week

Over 1,000 colleagues at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have put their arms forward for a flu vaccination in the first seven days of the Trust’s annual programme.

The campaign is helping colleagues protect themselves and the patients they care for ahead of winter, with vaccination available across Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital.

Flu can cause serious illness, particularly among older people, pregnant women and those with certain long-term health conditions. In hospitals, where many patients are already unwell or particularly vulnerable, vaccination is an important part of reducing the impact of flu.

Karen Jessop, Chief Nurse at DBTH, who received her jab a few days ago, said: “Thank you to all the colleagues who have already put their arms forward, and to everyone helping to deliver our vaccination programme.

“We care for people who can be especially vulnerable to flu, so getting vaccinated is an important step we can take to help protect ourselves and those around us. It also helps us stay well and maintain our services during the busy winter months.

“I would encourage colleagues who have yet to have their vaccination to take up the offer.”

Dr Nick Mallaband, Chief Medical Officer at DBTH, said: “Flu is much more than a bad cold. It can cause serious illness and lead to hospital admission, particularly for people who are already vulnerable.

“Vaccination helps reduce the risk of becoming seriously unwell. Protection reduces over time and flu viruses change, which is why getting vaccinated each year matters.

“As our colleagues come forward, we are also encouraging local people to get their flu vaccination. If you are eligible, please take up the offer and give yourself the best chance of staying well this winter.”

The free NHS flu vaccine is available to eligible groups, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and adults with certain long-term health conditions. Eligible people can arrange their vaccination through their GP surgery, a participating pharmacy, the NHS App or the NHS website.

Pregnant women receiving maternity care at DBTH can also have their free flu vaccination at antenatal clinics across the Trust, either during their appointment or at a dedicated vaccination appointment.

The vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy and helps protect both mother and baby. To arrange a vaccination, speak to your midwife or contact the Community Hub on 01302 642794.
