International Women’s Day 2021 profile: Dr Anuja Natarajan

Monday was International Women’s Day and to mark the occasion we have been asking our female colleagues about themselves. You may be surprised by their answers!

Dr Anuja Natarajan, Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, Clinical Director

Tell us about your journey into the NHS and what you would do differently, if anything?

My journey in the NHS spans 27 years and if I close my eyes I have mostly pleasant memories flashing through my mind. I may be biased, but I truly believe NHS is one of the best health systems in the world – non-discriminatory in whom it cares for and irrespective of colour caste or creed patient are treated with the same passion.  As a person I don’t regret any of the twists and turns in my NHS career and the journey has defined who I am and how I have evolved as a person and Doctor.  And since I am happy with who and where I am – I would not change anything.  One issue that does come to mind is gender inequality.  It exists in all streams of society and NHS is no exception. I hope that we can overcome this challenge within a shorter span of time than it seems to be taking and I will strive to do my best to contribute to the answer.

If you were stuck in a lift with anybody who would it be and why?

Aha!! Harvey Specter and Annalise Keating. The first for his good looks, good looks, good looks and the second for her sheer grit and drive to succeed while keeping her softer kinder side intact.  (for the uninitiated – these are two characters from popular Netflix series)

Your most inspirational female icon, past or present?

My mother has been the most inspirational woman in my life – if I am allowed to name only one! I have learnt so much just by observing how she has conducted herself as a mother, teacher, daughter, wife, aunt — with so much selflessness, poise, dignity and care in every role without making a show of it and to this day continues to do so.

What is your favourite food and most disliked, and why?

Lamb curry/biryani and, gosh for a foodie that’s really difficult one to answer – but not a fan of Beef

Do you have any phobias

I am claustrophobic and this only became evident in the last 10 years

What did you want to be when you were younger?

Teacher in the first 12 years of life and then Doctor!

Tell us something funny about yourself

My desire to sing at the Wembley stadium when I have the most off tune voice!
