Peter’s most enduring legacy with the Trust stems from his role as executor of Fred and Ann Green’s will. For over 25 years, he provided steadfast guidance to ensure their generous bequest of £11.5 million was carefully allocated to projects that have transformed healthcare for the people of Mexborough and beyond.
Fred and Ann Green were well-known figures in Mexborough, where they ran a family butcher’s shop on Hope Street from the 1930s.
Their business became famous for its quality, particularly their pork pies. Tragically, their only son, Alan, passed away at just 15 years old.
Despite this heartache, the couple channelled their energy into building their shop’s success, eventually selling it in 1958 to Associated Dairies, which later became ASDA.
Fred and Ann’s success allowed them to contribute significantly to their community, and their memory lives on through the Fred and Ann Green Legacy.
Their bequest (£11.5 million in 1998) has funded numerous projects at DBTH, including the Fred and Ann Green Rehabilitation Department at Montagu Hospital, the Fred and Ann Green Eye Centre at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, our connecting shuttle services, and, most recently, a surgical robot that has transformed care for hundreds of patients, amongst much else.
Their commitment to Mexborough has also supported a range of advancements, including upcoming investments in stroke care technology at Montagu Hospital.
Peter played a vital role in ensuring that the Greens’ vision was honoured. His thoughtful oversight of their legacy has profoundly impacted the lives of so many, with projects and services that will continue to benefit our patients and colleagues for generations.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Peter’s wife, Norma, for her own service within the NHS. Our thoughts are with her, their family, and all those who knew and loved Peter at this difficult time.
On behalf of everyone at Team DBTH, we express our deepest gratitude for Peter’s contributions. His work has ensured that the Fred and Ann Green legacy remains a shining example of how generosity and dedication can change lives for the better.
