Thanks to the introduction of a structured midwifery preceptorship programme, along with support from the pastoral team and practice development midwives, the Trust has seen its largest intake of new midwives to date, with 68 recruits since 2022.
The preceptorship programme, designed to help newly qualified midwives transition into practice, provides mentorship and training, helping them build confidence and develop their skills in a supportive environment.
Additionally, the Trust has also improved its workforce planning by meeting Birthrate Plus® standards – a nationally recognised tool used to calculate the number of midwives required based on the clinical needs of mothers and babies, ensuring that staffing levels are safe and effective.
Lois Mellor, Director of Midwifery at DBTH, said: “We’re thrilled with the progress we’ve made. Midwives are choosing to stay at the Trust, return after a career break, or start their professional journey here, which is a testament to the positive working environment we’ve cultivated.”
Since 2021, the number of midwives at DBTH has grown from 169 to 221. This increase, along with the recruitment of 11 internationally educated midwives, ensures that DBTH’s maternity services are well-staffed, enabling colleagues to focus on providing the best care possible without the pressures of understaffing.
Lois continued: “This sustained success is thanks to the ongoing support from our pastoral and practice development teams, ensuring midwives are set up for long-term success.”
