Andrea Johnson becomes a Cohort Director and Dental Network Co-Lead for the Healthcare Leadership Academy

After completing a rigorous selection process, Andrea Johnson, highly specialised dental technician and Orthodontic and Maxillofacial Laboratory manager at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), has been selected as Cohort Director and Dental Network Co-Lead for the Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA).

A voluntary and prestigious role, as a Cohort Director, Andrea will help to inspire, mentor and support these healthcare students and professionals within her cohort to change the world of healthcare through leadership, one small step at a time. At the same time, she will also co-lead the Dental Network, directly supporting aspiring leaders within this field of expertise.

The HLA was formed in 2016 in response to demand from young clinicians and medical students to learn about leadership. The aim of the programme is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and develop their understanding of leadership.

Speaking about the appointment, Andrea said: “The healthcare leadership academy is a fully inclusive organisation which offers opportunities for any healthcare worker aspiring to be a leader of the future, regardless of the area of healthcare they work in or their current position. As a Cohort Director I am very excited to be working with a driven and talented cohort of upcoming healthcare leaders and it is an absolute privilege to be able to help guide and mentor them on their leadership journey. I would encourage anyone wishing to embark on a healthcare related leadership journey of their own to apply to the programme.”

Andrea joined DBTH in 2017 as a highly specialised dental technician and Orthodontic and Maxillofacial Laboratory (OMFS) manager. Outside of work Andrea is well known for her work helping the homeless through her own dental charity Den-Tech and is a member of many advisory boards and steering committees, with professional bodies such as the College of General Dentistry and regulators such as the General Dental Council. As a result, Andrea is regularly invited to speak at conferences and events both in the UK and abroad including as a guest speaker at various universities and colleges around the country.

Dr Sam Debbage, Director of Education and Research, said: “We are incredibly proud of Andrea and we know she will bring great insight and expertise to this role. This appointment is also fantastic news for our Trust, and we have every confidence that Andrea will help to nurture, develop and mentor our future healthcare leaders.”

The HLA is approved by The Institute of Leadership & Management, is a certified member of Social Enterprises UK, and is commissioned by Health Education England North East and Health Education England South West.
