Partners in Doncaster have created an embedded a system partners for wound care known as the Doncaster Wound Care Alliance. The key partners in this ongoing alliance are:

  • Primary Care Doncaster
  • Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust
  • Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Doncaster Place – South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board
  • FCMS Ltd

An integrated model for wound care has been co-produced, including a tiered wound care service with consistent and cohesive educational programme with a joint Doncaster Wide Wound Care Formulary (hyperlink to its own page as below) and associated clinical pathways (hyperlink to its own page as below)  and a tiered wound care service  (hyperlink to its own page as below)  across the Doncaster Wound Care Alliance.

The new service works in a fully integrated way to ensure multi-disciplinary team working, a patient-centred approach and continuity of care to ensure the right care is provided in the right place at the right time for people living with or at risk of a wound.

The Doncaster Wound Care Alliance was named runner-up gaining high commendation for the Health Service Journal’s (HSJ) Integrated Care Initiative of the Year Award 2023. The HSH annual initiative provides a platform to share success stories across the health and social care sector, as well as helping to shape the future of the NHS.

Karen Jessop, Chief Nurse at DBTH, said: “I want to say a huge congratulations to the Doncaster Wound Care Alliance team for being named the HSJ’s Integrated Care Initiative of the Year Award runner-up. Your collaborative efforts and commitment to improving wound care have not only earned this recognition but, more importantly, have led to significant positive impact on the care of our patients. I am proud of each member’s dedication to do the very best for the people we serve in the borough.”

The Skin Integrity Lead Nurse DBTH Kelly Phillips comments;

‘’Wow….. We are all so proud and thankful for achieving High Commendation for the Integrated Care Initiative of the Year with the amazing Doncaster Wound Care Alliance. We are beaming with pride and happiness about this, but we truly feel it is our patients that have won. We would like to thank every single healthcare professional, patient and organisation that has been involved with this both past and present. They have all enabled this initiative to be successful in standardising care, managing service demand and complexity, embed a supportive governance structure and improving health care professional’s knowledge and skills, to care for people living with and at risk of developing a wound across the Doncaster Place.  It means so much to us all knowing that every time we review one of our patients we have optimised the care, to ensure it is provided in the right place and at the right time to improved their health and quality of life. Not only does the wound care alliance mean a lot to us but it means a lot to the people accessing our services too. They are happier and more comfortable. For example I met a patient and discussed the outcomes she was hoping for from commencing wound management for her ongoing leg ulcer and her response was ‘’ I just want to be able to hug my granddaughter again, as she will not sit with me due to being scared of the wound, because of the smell’’ – I am pleased confirm by receiving standardised evidence based care through the seamless transition in the alliance the leg ulcer healed in 3 months and she got plenty of hugs from her granddaughter’’.

Editor of the Health Service Journal, Alastair McLellan comments;

“What better year than the 75th anniversary of our wonderful and world-leading NHS to be able to applaud all those who were highly commended at the 2023 HSJ Awards. “There are so many reasons to submit an entry to the HSJ Awards, including proactively benchmarking efforts in driving efficiencies, improving services and illustrating how projects provide and deliver better outcomes. But, moreover, I feel very proud that our awards programme provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the healthcare workforce across the UK, gaining national recognition for hard work and success stories. He adds; “It was so encouraging to – once again – see an unprecedented level of entries! The calibre of projects was outstanding and I really do hope that all of our entrants enjoyed the experience and benefitted from the informed feedback they received from our skilled and highly experienced judging panel.  “So, huge congratulations to <organisation/name> and welcome to the HSJ Awards alumni.”.

Cathy Winfield MBE, Chief Nurse at NHS South Yorkshire, said: “I am incredibly proud of the Doncaster Wound Care Alliance for their dedication to transforming wound care services for local people. This recognition is a testament to their collaborative efforts in ensuring that every patient receives the right care, in the right place, and at the right time.

The HSJ Awards received a record-breaking 1456 entries this year, with 223 projects and individuals making it to the final ceremony, which took place in London on the evening of 16 November.
