Child Development Centre

Our Child Development Centre Team has Speech and Language Therapists and Speech and Language Therapy Assistants that cover Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

What do we do?

The Child Development Centre team sees young children up to the age of 5 (the end of Reception class) who have significant speech, language, and communication difficulties, as well as other developmental needs which require a multi-disciplinary team approach. The team is made up of Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants who are based within the CDC clinic in Children’s Outpatients. The team work with parents and educational staff to provide targets and advice to be implemented in the child’s functional setting, on a daily basis, in home and nursery/school.

Where do we work?

We work mostly in nurseries, mainstream schools and patient’s homes, across Doncaster and Bassetlaw but can also see children at the Child Development Centre at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital.

What to expect?

All our first appointments are completed by phone with the child or young person’s parent/carer. The child/young person does not need to be present for these. We will discuss the child/young person’s needs and their parent/carer’s concerns and views and agree what to do next.

Next, we usually arrange a visit to the child/young person’s nursery, school or home, so that we can meet them along with parents and/or educational staff, who know them well. We will normally carry out some initial assessment at this visit and agree therapy goals with school staff and parents.
