What do we do?
Our Deafness Specialist works with children and young people from 1 – 18 years old who have a severe – profound hearing loss (71 dB or more). Our Deafness Specialist works with children and young people who use spoken language/s and/or sign language, who wear hearing aids, cochlear implants or no hearing equipment.
Where do we work?
Our Deafness Specialist works in nurseries, schools, colleges, Plover Primary school and Outwood Danum Secondary Resources for children with a hearing loss and also home visits. Our Deafness Specialist attends the Doncaster pre-school group for children with a hearing loss termly: BlueBEarEY.
What to expect?
The first appointment is usually at home to take a case history from the parent/carer and to assess the child or young person. Our Deafness Specialist usually will complete this visit with the Teacher of the Deaf. An Interpreter will be booked if needed.
At this session, a plan will be made, to decide if Speech and Language Therapy is appropriate, where it will be carried out, what the targets will be, and who will be involved. Speech and Language Therapy sessions take place in the most appropriate setting for the child and young person. Appointment letters are sent to the family/carer to inform them of a nursery/school visit, but they do not have to be present. A written Therapy Update is sent after every session and shared with all involved. For children in Plover Resource, a termly update will be sent as our Deafness Specialist visits weekly.
