What do we do?
The Speech and Language Therapy Service is funded to work with young people who are being supported by the Youth Justice Service. This is because there is lots of evidence to show that young people who find themselves being supported by the Youth Justice Service have speech, language and communication needs that have gone unnoticed/undiagnosed. This affects the young people’s ability to work with professionals and engage in education, training and employment. The Speech and Language Therapy Service aims to identify the needs of the young person, and provide advice and support to help families, education providers and professionals understand the young persons needs and strategies to support them.
Where do we work?
Sessions take place in education settings, young people’s homes, or community locations.
What to expect?
The young people accessing this part of the service cannot be referred using the main referral form to the NHS team. They access support through referral from their Youth Justice Worker. The Speech and Language Therapy service is tailored to meet the individual needs of each young person, through joint working with their Youth Justice Worker, to plan appointments and provision.
